Growing good food for good people
Food Bank Farms, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to develop working farms that will specifically provide food to the food banks and charities in and around the communities in which the farms operate. We shall endeavor to grow all vegetables, herbs, fruits and nuts appropriate to each farms specific region. We will raise a wide variety of animals for the purpose of providing food, fertilizer, pollination and hands-on educational opportunities. We will also create and implement programs that foster promotion of sustainable building practices, sustainable energy production and participation in music and the arts.
In 2008 Flathead Food Bank reported serving 3,124 families, a number that was up over 18% from the previous year. They also reported supplying 580,993 pounds of food to those families, a number which was down by 90,000 lbs from the previous year. These numbers represent only one food bank of several in the Flathead. Unfortunately, the number of families going hungry in our own community is growing, and the supplies to help are dwindling.
